My name's Nelly and I’m the bass player in the complete stone roses
I’m ... twenty.... seven? ... twenty seven.... I actually forgot my age there, how bad is that?!
Usually musicians start when there really young, but I started playing the bass when I was 18 years old! I actually bought my first bass when I was 15 because I was standing behind the smokers in high school and this random guy came up to me and said “ Nelly man ,Do you want to play the bass in our band? “ .. and a was like “aye why not “ , So I went the next day and bought a bass guitar and it lay there for years , I ended up just drinking and stuff with these guys , and when I was 18 I decided to pick it up and I just started jamming .. I thought this is pretty cool and I got right into it and I joined a band with boys I used to be in school with, and ever since then I’ve jumped from band to band to band. And now I’ve found my home! I mean I was always a big fan of the roses so this was perfect for me.
I’m an insane roses fan! Seriously I’ve got a lot of their rare stuff... i have a spike island Ep that came with a bit of grass and a wee fake cigarette. I got into them when I was about 18, especially the bass; main is a top bass player. I heard ADORED in a pub one time and asked who it was that sings it, summoned said the stone roses, and after that I loved them... ive been a solid fan for about 10 years now ! .. Before that I was like everyone else, listening to techno and all that shit, oasis and techno! BRILLIANT!
Well the album in the CD player is glasvegas but I have a lot of time for bands like kasabian, primal scream... Oasis’ new album (dig out your soul) is excellent, I rate it very highly. It’s the same with glasvegas, when they played the proms... oasis sat and watched them sound check! ... All the good bands end up together somehow ha-ha, the site bands... we can forget about them ha-ha!
There’s not a right answer to this question ha-ha... I think I have the oldest head in the band. there’s an older member than me in the band , we won’t say his name , but I think I have the oldest head .. I juts like to keep everything mellow, I like to keep everyone cool and simple... i love to wind everyone up , have a laugh , but at the end of the night , we just make sure were all cool , go on stage and have a blast !
My musical idol, if it wasn’t for this guy I would never have even considered buying a bass, Sid Vicious! Seriously... the guy was like a pioneer of cool! The guy is just fucking cool man; he just didn’t care... his hair all over the show, not giving a fuck, just rocking out! I thought that was really cool man. A lot of people take there self’s to seriously these days, look at my fucking hair right now! I’m not going to sit for 4 hours plastering gel in my hair, putting moisturiser on to look like some poster boy! What you see is what you get
I’d love to jam with the beastie boys! Primal scream, bands like kasabian... but ultimately the stone roses! That would be amazing!
Stadium gigs! , when you see bands playing like Wembley and stuff , it looks mad , I’d love to aim for that , the album sales , the gigs ... I’d love it.
It changes all the time really. At first my dream was to play the king tuts, and when we done that, I wanted to play the carling! And we’ve done that now. After that it was festivals! And now we’ve played some of the biggest ones in Scotland and Ireland, so I guess Murray field is next! Ha-ha, and then to top it off a gig in the bar fly, that would be cool.
My plan is to be doing this, exactly the same! This is my full time job and I have no intention of leaving, I love it. I still play with a few mates every now and then, but this is it for me.
For me personally it was meeting Mani, we played at the Belfast empire, and he came up and said you were excellent tonight on the bass mate, done us proud. That comment, from the original bass player has been the highlight! Then we ended up getting pissed at the hotel that night ha-ha, that was the number one for me.
